About Shay
The professional
I’m an Australian freelance tech/media/games/geek journalist based in Sydney, Australia. In the days of yore, I worked video production and web production. Got my writing break with the UK edition of business IT magazine MIS, then later with Internet AU, where I climbed into the Deputy Editor chair during the magazines final months.
Since 2005 I’ve been a full-time pen-for-hire. You can find my words in places like APC, Atomic MPC, Australian Macworld, Desktop, Hyper, Player, Rolling Stone and the Sydney Morning Herald, along with tech-related trade and business magazines. In 2007, I was launch Editor of the Australian edition of Gizmodo. I’ve also managed to pick up a few awards — Best New Technology Journalist, 2004; Best Consumer Technology Journalist, 2006; Best Games Journalist, 2007.
My words generally revolve around the sweeping theme of new things — new technologies, new sites, new games, new designs, new ideas.
The person
Born in the western suburbs of Sydney and having lived in most every corner of the metro area, my first computer was a TRS-80 CoCo 2. Mmm… datasettes… It was then a long wait (and much lust for the Amiga 500) before landing my first PC: a 386DX40. First on the block to break the 100MB HDD barrier with that one. Then to a PI-150, then PIII-500, then a G4. Now as a tech journo I taste more machines than 10-year-old me ever dreamed of. For the rubberneckers, my main machine is an Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, with a test/gaming PC running a Q6600.
I love pretty much anything that involves a screen. Tech. Gadgets. TV. Movies. Science (c’mon, scientists NEED screens to do their thing). And Games… even an (un)healthly dose of games that don’t have screens. No, wait! GM screens! Damn, I’m good. Off-screen, I like books.
Married since June ‘03 and a dad since March ‘06.
And it’s pronounced with a ‘Shh’ sound at the start of my name, in case you’re wondering.
